  EMS 208 ‐ Introduction to Emergency Pre‐hospital Care  

Number of credits:

  1 credits 

Course Description: 

 This is an introductory course for the paramedic student. It will build on the 

knowledge gained during the student’s EMT‐Basic education and experiences as well as introducing the 

student to the expanded role of the paramedic.  Topics include roles and responsibilities, EMS systems, 

the well‐being of the paramedic, illness and injury prevention, medical/legal issues, ethics, general 

principles of pathophysiology, therapeutic communications, EMS research and documentation.

Pre‐/Co‐requisites:  

none. 

Course Objectives:  

To integrate comprehensive knowledge of EMS systems, safety/well being of the 

paramedic, medical/legal and ethical issues, which is intended to improve the health of EMS personnel,

patients, and the community. 

Teaching‐learning methods in this course may include, but are not limited to, assigned readings, 

independent studies, presentations, discussion, critical thinking exercises, labs and class activities.

Course Requirements:

  Students will be required to attend class and complete assignments in 

MyBradyLab and exams in EMStesting on time.  Final exams will be worth 40%, additional tests 20%, 

quizzes 20%, homework 10% and affective behavior 10%.  Students will also be required to pass skill 

sheets and scenario skills sessions per portfolio requirements (where applicable).
