Course Description:
This course introduces the paramedic student to a comprehensive physical
examination and assessment, which includes history taking, clinical decision making, communications,
and documentation. This course will also build on the students EMT knowledge of scene safety and
keeping themselves, their crew and the patient safe while completing an assessment.
Pre‐/Co‐requisites:
none.
Course Objectives:
To integrate knowledge of scene safety practices and patient assessment findings
with knowledge of epidemiology and pathophysiology to form a field impression. This includes
developing a list of differential diagnoses through clinical reasoning to modify the assessment and
formulate a treatment plan.

Course Requirements:
Students will be required to attend class and complete assignments in
MyBradyLab and exams in EMStesting on time. Final exams will be worth 40%, additional tests 20%,
quizzes 20%, homework 10% and affective behavior 10%. Lab will be graded on a pass/fail system with a
passing grade received when all required skills are completed with appropriate, supervised technique.
Students will also be required to pass skill sheets and scenario skills sessions per portfolio requirements
(where applicable).
