Course Description:
This course introduces students to laws that protect and conserve fish, wildlife, and natural
resources including federal and state laws (primarily ND law). Included are other jurisdictional laws,
such as tribal laws, and laws concerning border crossings. The course will discuss how laws are created
and enforced. The course will also study court cases involving wildlife laws. Instructional methods
include lecture, class discussion, and guest speakers.
Pre-/Co-requisites:
FWLD 122, FWLD 122 or

Course Objectives:
1)
To understand and appreciate why there are laws concerning natural resources.
2)
To learn the basic concept of how laws are created and enforced.
3)
To understand the difference between state laws and federal laws.
4)
To study and discuss state and federal legislation and case law effecting fisheries and
wildlife laws.
5)
To understand the types of jurisdictions and how each has different laws and regulations
6)
To understand public rights and processes law enforcement uses to uphold those rights.
7)
To apply laws and procedures to everyday life as a game warden/conservation officer
8)
To understand a person’s rights, procedures for search and seizure, evidence collection,
chain of custody, and use of evidence in court.
9)
To understand each state, federal, and other wildlife enforcement entities and what the
differences between them.
