Dakota College at Bottineau Course Syllabus Course Prefix/Number/Title: EMS 208 - Introduction to Emergency Pre-hospital Care Number of credits: 1 credits Course Description: This is an introductory course for the paramedic student. It will build on the knowledge gained during the student’s EMT-Basic education and experiences as well as introducing the student to the expanded role of the paramedic. Topics include roles and responsibilities, EMS systems, the well-being of the paramedic, illness and injury prevention, medical/legal issues, ethics, general principles of pathophysiology, therapeutic communications, EMS research and documentation. Pre-/Co-requisites: none. Course Objectives: To integrate comprehensive knowledge of EMS systems, safety/well being of the paramedic, medical/legal and ethical issues, which is intended to improve the health of EMS personnel, patients, and the community. Teaching-learning methods in this course may include, but are not limited to, assigned readings, independent studies, presentations, discussion, critical thinking exercises, labs and class activities. Course Requirements: Students will be required to attend class and complete assignments in MyBradyLab and exams in EMStesting on time. Final exams will be worth 40%, additional tests 20%, quizzes 20%, homework 10% and affective behavior 10%. Students will also be required to pass skill sheets and scenario skills sessions per portfolio requirements (where applicable).
