Dakota College at Bottineau Course Syllabus Course Prefix/Number/Title: Garden Planning Will need a prefix and number Number of credits:2 credits Course Description: Garden planning will teach you how to plan gardens! We will learn to plan shade gardens, part sun gardens, full sun gardens, private gardens, public gardens, vegetable gardens and more. Pre-/Co-requisites: None Course Objectives: This course will teach students to measure garden spaces, plan pleasing plant combinations and familiarize students with mature plant size and how to put that on paper. We will study the sun and learn what plants work in what part of the property we are developing. Students will be required to design a vegetable garden a home flower garden, a public flower garden and container garden combinations. Tentative Course Outline: Week one; Students will view Jeff Ball’s “How To Design a Flower Garden” Hands on experience will involve measuring garden space and drawing out garden plans for the home garden and public garden using Annuals, Perennials and Shrubs. Week 2; Students will view “How To Design a Vegetable Garden” Hands on experience will involve measuring garden space and implementing a vegetable garden design. Container garden design also will be studies at the end of week 2. General Education Goals/Objectives: The goal of this class it to familiarize students with the design aspect of flower and vegetable gardening. Relationship to Campus Theme: DCB and the IPG known for their beautiful gardens will produce students eager to design and implement gardens for others. Students coming from our program must be familiar with garden design.
