Dakota College at Bottineau Course Syllabus Course Prefix/Number/Title: Hort. 177 and 178 Floral Design I Spring 2019 Number of credits: 3 each Course Description: Floral Design I will acquaint students with the history of Floral Design, proper care and handling of floral materials and proper use and care of tools and equipment. Safety techniques for the use of tools, proper lifting techniques, standing to avoid fatigue and basic first aid will be covered. Pre-/Co-requisites: Pre-none/ Co-Floral Design II Course Objectives: Students will become familiar with proper care and handling techniques of floral materials and tools commonly used in the industry. Students will study the principles and elements of design and floral terminology. Students will become familiar with the use of color in design. Students will become familiar with everyday floral design styles and be able to make them successfully by the end if the class. Floral Design II Continuing to expand on skills learned in Floral Design I, students will become proficient in the following design styles; Sympathy work: Casket sprays, Easel sprays, set pieces (Hearts, crosses etc.). Lid pieces, Pedestal designs, Basket arrangements, Foliage and Flowering plant preparation. Wedding work: Current trends in Bridal bouquets, Attendant flowers, Altar flowers, Corsages and Boutonnieres, Reception Flowers and Décor, Cake flowers. Contemporary Design styles: Students will study several classic and advanced styles of design such as; Classic-mass, Mell de Fleur, Biedermeier, Phoenix, Waterfall, Naturalistic-Garden, Sheltering, Basing, Pillowing, Grouping, Banding and Bundling, Framing, Shadowing and Oriental.
