Spring 2019 Course Syllabi

Introductory Speech The introductory speech is a two-minute speech of self-introduction. The purpose of this assignment is to give you a chance to “break the ice” with the audience. Begin your speech by introducing yourself (name, hometown, favorite school subject, and your future plans – college, work, etc.). You will then develop the body of your speech to include a brief representation of you are. You are trying to define who you are in a brief time, so discuss a quick event or situation that made you who you are. Are you an athlete? Are you academically driven? Are you a philosopher or logically driven? Describe a time or event that made you that way.  Time – 2-3 minutes  Notecards – Use 1 (3X5) Oral Interpretation For this speech, choose two poems/short stories to reach to the class. You may use any appropriate poem you want as long as it meets the time requirements. You cannot use a poem you have written yourself. When choosing a poem or story, choose one that will work well for oral interpretation. Poems or stories that have a plot or have characters might be best for your “performance”. Your speech will have an introduction to set up your selection (why did you choose this specific poem, historical background, etc.). The body of the speech is the actual reading. The conclusion would be a quick wrap- up of the story – kind of like a moral of the story ending.  Time – 3-4 minutes  Typed out poem or short story. Do not read from the book. You will lose a letter grade if you read directly from a book or have notecards.  You must submit an outline to this speech via Blackboard. Brown Bag Speech The brown bag speech is designed to share your life with the audience. Much like an introductory speech, this speech allows you to be more personal in your approach. You will select three items – first item should describe your past, the second your present, and the third your future. The items should hold a personal connection to you and be easily displayed.  Time – 3-4 minutes  Notecards – 1 notecard (4X6)  You must submit an outline to this speech via Blackboard.
