1 Biology 2 Syllabus Spring Semester 2019 Course : BIO 151 Biology 2 (4 Credits) Course Days/Times : MWF (lecture): 1pm-1:50pm; Tuesday (lab): 1am-2:50am Prerequisites : None Instructor : Taija Hahka Office : NSC 113 Office Hours : MWF: 9am-9:50am & 3pm-3:45pm Office Phone Number : 701-228-5472 Email : taija.hahka@ndus.edu Course Description : The second semester of a two-semester sequences study of the fundamental topics of biology, with an emphasis on organismal biology. Course Objectives : Demonstrate an understanding and proficiency with the following concepts: 1. Describe the unity and diversity of life, including structure and function and how this relates to environment. 2. Describe how live (or life forms) has (have) changed over time. 3. Understand basic evolution and evolutionary processes. 4. Develop and understanding of ecology. General Education Goals/ Objectives : Goal 1: Explains the interrelationships between humans and their environment and the role of science in their lives. Goal 2: Demonstrates knowledge and application of technology. Relationship to Campus Theme : Class announcement/discussion on news items about technological developments in biology, and how that influences the discipline as well as societal aspects. Knowledge on cell structure and function related to microscope development. Interject technological developments and how they influence scientific development and societal issues. Textbook(s) : There is no book for this class. Instead each student will be provided PowerPoint lecture slides and additional reading material for each concept. Each student is responsible for obtaining this information on blackboard and printing the material off prior to class. If student wishes to take notes on his/her laptop during class they may. There is no lab manual for this class. You will be given assignments/worksheets prior to each lab (posted on blackboard). Course Requirements : 4 Hour Exams (100 pts. each) 400 pts. 1 Final Exam 100 pts. Blackboard quizzes (5-10 pts. each) 100 pts. Lab reports/write-ups/ assignments (5-10 pts. each) 100 pts. 2 Final Lab Exam (50 points each) 100 pts. Presentations 50 pts. Attendance and participation 50 pts. ______ Total: 900 pts Classroom Policies : Participation and attendance are required in class. o Participation is defined as : the act of taking part in an event or activity. Attendance is taken during all lectures and labs. All requests for absences need to be discussed with the instructor immediately before lecture or lab. Absences need to be reported to me immediately, so we can make advanced arrangements. A = 100-90% B = 89-80% C = 79-70% D = 69-60% F = below 60%
