Dakota College at Bottineau Course Syllabus Course Prefix/Number/Title: RLS 285 Natural Resource Law Number of credits : 3 Course Description: The course will provide a basic overview of the laws concerned with the environment and human activities, focusing on conservation and land use. Areas of specific concentration include the Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Antiquities Act, Migratory Bird and Conservation Act and the consequences of activities such as timber harvesting, grazing, recreation and wilderness preservation. In addition to gaining knowledge of federal environmental laws, students will also gain an understanding of why the laws are necessary and how to apply the laws to real life situations. Pre-/Co-requisites: None Course Objectives: It is expected that students will be able to: 1. Develop a working knowledge of major federal environmental laws. 2. Understand why the laws were inplemented 3. How to apply the laws to real life situations. Regular participation in the class is expected. 2. Assignments are given to reinforce chapter content. They are practical in nature and require the student to apply new knowledge of chapters. Assignments are shall be submitted by the due date. Those not turned in on the due date will be penalized by a loss of points. 3. Quizzes and exams will be given to reinforce material presented in each unit. 4. Grades are based on total points earned and include the points earned on assignments and exams. Course Outline: 1.
