Dakota College at Bottineau Course Syllabus Course Prefix/Number/Title: PLSC 175 Landscape Design I 2016 3 credits Course Description: Landscape Design I is an introduction to basic landscape design principles. Emphasis is placed on tool and equipment identification and use, drawing and drafting skills, site evaluation and plant placement. The principles and elements of design are covered in this course. Course Objectives: • Students will: Implement general principles of landscape graphics, proper usage of tools, graphic representation and materials. • Utilize standard tools and materials to produce landscape graphics. • Understand general principles of landscape design such as; color, form, space, balance, focal point, and • rhythm. • Display proper use of plant materials. • Practice the proper use of hardscape materials and other non-plant materials. • Students must demonstrate good work habits such as class attendance and complete assignments on • time. Booth and James E. Hiss , 6th edition which is available in the bookstore or online Course Requirements: Students need to buy a drawing kit (one is available in the bookstore), an extra HB pencil or two and a pad of tracing paper also available in the bookstore. Grading Scale: 100-90% = A, 90-80% = B, 70-80% = C, 60-70% = D, below 60% failing Grading will be based on quiz and test scores but more heavily on daily and weekly assignments and projects. Evaluation of projects/assignments for grading will be based on the following criteria: • On time • Neatness • Completion and inclusion of major points for the project/assignment • Student’s work indicates a level of understanding of basic principles learned from the assignment • Student’s work indicates a thought process including client needs, basic research of plant material, and good drafting techniques You MUST bring your drawing equipment every day.
