2 Week 5 Chapter 4: Broadway and “Standards” Quiz 4 Week 6 Chapter 5 Hillbilly Music and Country Blues Chapter 5:Popular Music and the Great Depression Quiz 5 Week 7 Chapter 6 The Rise and Decline of Big Band/ Swing Midterm Review /Quiz 6 Week 8 Chapter 7: R&B Women and Technology in the Post War Era Week 9 Midterm Exam/Guest Speaker In Class Assignment 1 Week 10 Chapter 8: Rock N’ Roll 1954-1959 Chapter 9: The British Invasion Quiz 7 Week 11 Chapters 10-12: The 1970’s In Class Assignment 2 Week 12 Chapter 13: Digital Technology and Pop Music Quiz 8 Week 13 Chapter 14: Alternative, Folk and Hip Hop in the 1990’s Quiz 9 Week 14 Chapter 15: Music and Technology in the Internet Age Quiz 10 Week 15 The Music Documentary Week 16 Conclusions/ Final Identification Quiz: Students will be asked to identify 5 key terms, artists or songs. Each ID has a point value of 2 points per item. In Class Group Assignment: Students will be divided into groups by the Instructor. While the students will work together as a group, each student must turn in their own written version of the assignment. Midterm and Final: These assignments will be given to students based upon the content covered in class up to the date of the Midterm and Final. These are NOT cumulative. General Education Goals/Course Objectives: This course aligns with the specific general education guidelines established by Dakota College at Bottineau. Specifically students will address the following goals: Students will be able to analyze musical forms using the appropriate terminology, evaluate the social events that influenced their production and coherently explain the relationships between the arts, humanities and society as outlined in Goal 7. Specifically Objectives 2, 3 and 4. Relationship to Campus Theme: This course uses the campus theme of “Nature, Technology and Beyond,” in part to explore how music draws inspiration from the natural world. Moreover we explore the complex dynamic relationship between science, nature and art to describe the world at specific moments in time. Using music genres as case studies we can learn more about the development of artistic mediums, iconography and technology on a global scale.
