Engl. 110-College Composition Syllabus 10:18-11:08 Fall 2019 Instructor: Melissa Remick (218)760-7778 melissa.remick@ndus.edu Office Hours: Any afternoon after 2pm and any time by appointment Course Description : A basic writing course which allows students to write about a variety of topics while considering and evaluating the writing of others. Course Objectives :  To identify and evaluate the thesis and supporting details in others’ writing  To use writing and revising strategies to produce essays  To cite sources accurately using MLA guidelines  To identify important concepts in reading and discuss them Required Materials: Eschholz, Paul and Alfred Rosa. Models for Writers Short Essays for Composition. 10 th ed. Boston: Bedford/St,Martin’s, 2010. Skloot, Rebecca. Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks. S.L., Picador, 2018. Course Requirements: Students will read weekly assignments from in the textbook and other materials, will complete assignments on readings, and will write/revise paragraphs and essays on assigned topics, and complete weekly journal entries. If you miss 6 classes, you will lose 1 letter grade; miss 9 classes, lose 2 letter grades; miss 10 or more classes, you will fail the class. This is not because I am a mean teacher. If you are not in class and not participating, you will not be earning points. The lack of points from a lack of attendance will lower your grade. A student’s final grade is based on total points received from the following: • Essays • In Class Assignments Journals & Quizzes • Exams Late Work: Students in college are required to hand in assignments when they are due. If you contact me ahead of the assigned due date you may be able to receive an extension of one class period. You must contact me at least 24 hours prior to the assignments due date. Late work will not be accepted without prior approval. Grade Scale: 90-100%-A 80-89%-B 70-79%-C 60-69%-D Below 60%-F Finals: The final Exam for this class will be held the last day of class
