BIO 150 Syllabus Fall 2018 1 Dakota College at Bottineau Course Syllabus Biology 150 Course Prefix/Number/Title: BIOL 150 General Biology I, Number of Credits: 4 semester credits Instructor: Taija Hahka, MS Office: NSC 113 Office Hours: MWF: 11:00am-11:50am Or with a scheduled appointment Office Phone: 701.228.5472 Email : taija.hahka@ndus.edu Lecture Days/Times: Lecture meets MWF from 1:00pm-1:50pm; Location: NSC Room # 125 Lab Days/Time: Lab meets on Tuesdays 1:00pm-2:50pm OR on Thursdays 10am-11:50am; Location: in NSC Room # 126 Course Description: The first semester of a two-semester sequenced study of the fundamental topics of biology, with an emphasis on cellular biology. Text Book not required for this class: There will be no required text book for this class. Instead you will get handouts and PowerPoint slides that you will be required to print off (in lab and lecture). You will be responsible to keep these items for the entire semester. You are responsible for printing off the notes prior to coming to class. Materials for Lecture (Required): 1. 2 or 3 inch ring binder 2. Access to a hole punch, printer, paper, email, and blackboard 3. Pen or something to write with Lab Materials (Required): 1. Research composition notebook 2. Pen or something to write with 3. Folder/0.5 inch binder Prerequisites: none Course Objectives--Demonstrate an understanding and proficiency in the following: 1. Understand cellular and viral structure and function. 2. Understand fundamental biochemical principles. 3. Understand rudimentary classical genetics 4. Understand rudimentary molecular genetics and have a familiarity with various DNA technologies 5. Use knowledge about mechanisms of cellular and molecular processes. Course Requirements and Grading: • A = 100-90% • B = 89-80% • C = 79-70% • D = 69-60% • F = below 60%
