About TRIO


In the Fall of 2015, Dakota College at Bottineau was notified by Senator Hoeven’s office that it was the recipient of a five-year federal Department of Education grant in the amount of $1.1 million dollars. This funding is part of the Department of Education’s TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Program, which seeks to provide academic and general support services to low-income, first-generation or disabled college students. The goal is to increase student success throughout the DCB campus, to increase student grade point average and graduation rates, and enhance faculty, staff and student relationships. The program will also facilitate career awareness and readiness, helping students transfer from two-year to four-year colleges or into their field of work.

This is the first time Dakota College at Bottineau has received this grant. Dakota College is using the grant funds to enhance their student services by launching a new Student Support Services program on campus, currently referred to as TRIO. The TRIO offices have been physically consolidated with the Learning Center located in Thatcher Hall. They will provide personal and professional tutoring, study tables, homework sessions, career support information, resume writing, transfer assistance, test proctoring, and academic advising along with other student success support.

Three new staff positions have been developed to run the program including two Coordinators and an Administrative Assistant. DCB is pleased to announce that the three TRIO positions have been filled. We are very fortunate to welcome the following DCB staff in their new roles: Melissa Fulsebakke as Administrative Assistant, Brock Lemon as Academic Counselor, and Laura Halvorson as Career Counselor.


Objective 1 – 40% of all participants served in the reporting year by the SSS project will persist from one academic year to the beginning of the next academic year or earn an associate’s degree or certificate at the grantee institution and/or transfer from a 2-year to a 4-year institution by the fall term of the next academic year.

Objective 2 – 90% of all enrolled SSS participants served will meet the performance level required to stay in good academic standing at the grantee institution.

Objective 3A – 30% of new participants served each year will graduate from the grantee institution with an associate’s degree or certificate within four (4) years.

Objective 3B -  10% of new participants served each year will receive an associate’s degree or certificate form the grantee institution and transfer to a four-year institution within four (4) years.
