Various readings, handouts, videos and field trips are the basis of discussions. The class is based on the following Text which is out of print. Excerpts from this text will appear in the notes available on ERes. Laarman, Jan G. and Roger A. Sedjo. 1992. Global Forests: Issues for Six Billion People. McGraw- Hill Inc., 337 pp. (Available in Library on Reserve for limited readings as it is out of print) OBJECTIVE: To introduce the student to the general field of forestry. We will talk about individual areas of interest and the problems facing these portions of the forests. We truly have a global forest. Each part of the system is tied in with every other part. The class will be built around discussions of current events affecting the global forest ecosystem. The student should come away with a clearer idea of how he or she fits into the whole picture of forestry, and how forestry fits into the local and global community from the woods to the prairie. (General Ed objectives #2 and #8) DESCRIPTION: The course is based on readings, discussions in class of those readings, discussions of current events relevant to the subjects as they may occur, guest speakers in various fields of forestry and video presentations, with a particular emphasis on the slant placed on the presentation by the company or organization producing it. This course does not have many right or wrong answers. It is based on logical arguments for or against each subject. We will not solve all the problems of the world, but we will have a more complete understanding of what the problems are on which to base our own opinions. CLASS SCHEDULE Dates are noted on the class calendar, but we will not limit discussion on any topic until it is sufficiently covered. With students from throughout the United States and the World, we have a diverse base of backgrounds and opinions from which to draw. The emphasis placed on each area will vary from year to year based on this diversity. 1. Thinking about One-World Forests. Discussion Topic: Who controls the Forest and its products? 2. Global Forest Cover and Trends. Discussion Topic: Where are the forests, what is in them, how is it changing and what demands are being put on them? 3. Forests and Development: Introduction and Overview. Discussion Topic: Does the type and amount of forest affect a country's development and who has final control over the forest's utilization? 4. Forests and Development: Forest Industries Discussion Topic: What are the products of the forest, how do we harvest them, and what are the impacts of harvest and techniques used on the land and the economies of the countries involved? 5. International Trade of Forest Products. Discussion Topic: Where do our products go, who benefits, what restrictions are placed on the trade and how are we going to overcome them? 6. Farm and Community Forestry. Discussion Topic: What is farm forestry, cropping trees, working with trees and crops, or getting rid of a nuisance which happens to be a tree? What is Urban and Community forestry and how does it differ from the traditional resource management form of forestry? 7. Forests and Global Environment. Discussion Topic: What affect does the forest have on the environment? How does change affect this balance? What about Global Warming, the Spotted Owl, Acid Rain and Biodiversity? 8. International Cooperation. Discussion Topic: Where is help needed, in utilization or conservation? What are the effects of Earth Summits and other gatherings? 9. Progress through learning. Discussion Topic: We draw our conclusions on the whole concept of Global Forests. Break down of where your points come from for Intro Class. 20 points for each initial comment on a topic -- Total of about 10 topics 10 points each for the inclass quizzes and projects. 50 points maximum for classroom participation -- assigned at end of semester 100 points for a short final paper. The course calendar gives us an idea of when each project should be posted. This does not mean that you cannot comment at any time during the course, since the strength of this type of delivery increases as interaction increases. 9 ; C K Y ` k Ы в д е ` j ё I S Ї ф љѕљѕљѕљѕљѕэѕэчэѕљѕљтѕљѕљѕљѕљѕо hC6A hMх \ hMх 0J j hMх UhMх hMх 5\ ; K ` ` ё I g Щ b ' Э ѕ Э p ф # n Є ђ њ Р!
